Caesarea

Today is our last day in Israel.  We left our apartment in Nazareth around 10am this morning.  Our landlady has been very kind.  She is so concerned about my cold and cough.  I still cannot get rid of it.  She gave me some cough drops the other day and offered to make me a lemon and honey drink.  Her apartment is below ours and we have to go through her balcony to take the stairs down to the street.  She is often tending her plants when we go by.  We decided to take the hot dogs, bread and butter with us as we were not sure what kind of accommodations we would have at Kefer Habad.  Mike chose it because it was the closed place we could find to the airport.

We headed off to Caesarea - along the Mediterranean.  The setting is beautiful.  It is easy to see why people kept building cities here in spite of the earthquakes and flooding.  This area like so many other areas has so many layers of different cultures berried here.  We entered through the Crusader Gate to find a lot of Roman ruins - pillars laying around.

The outside wall and moat.
A view of the Crusader Gate from the inside.

This place has a long way to go to excavate everything that is here.

 A row of pillars.
 Harbour views:

The way it was in its heyday.  Between earthquakes and flooding, a lot of it has been destroyed or is underwater.
 A sarcophagus.
 The Bosnian Mosque.

 Staulking the sculpture.

Paddle boarding.  You could also dive - and actually see what things still exists under the water.

An uncovered mosaic still under water from the last rain.
The amphitheatre faces the Mediterranean.  The race course faces the water.  Here are a few shots so you can imagine what the Chariot races must have looked like.

A marble floor still in place.

 Fun with shadows.

 The beach is still beautiful.

A contrast of the ancient and modern.
