9-7 On to Italy

Our mission in Italy is to find the perfect place that we can return to again and again.  We think it should look like Cefalu, Sicily.  We loved that town.  But we have seen everything we want to see in Sicily - so if we can find its twin in mainland Italy it would be a dream come true.

Cefalu has a new town complete with all the stores you need to find modern amenities.  It also has an old town that we love, it also has beaches and a long water front to walk along.  Its further to walk to the harbor - but you can do that too.  The only problem is that Cefalu does not have public transportation to get you around the area.  There was a train that went one place, but not to multiple cities - and we would like that ability so we do not have to rent a car.

We flew from Amsterdam to Bologna - then rented a car and drove towards Venice and beyond.  Our destination was Caorle, Italy- a small town hugging the Adriatic on its northern edge. We had in mind to check out a few towns here and then go into Slovenia's short 41 km shoreline to check out 4 more towns.  Unfortunately, euro countries charge you 10 E extra per day for your whole rental even if you go into Slovenia for 1 day - so we decided not to.

Caorle is a nice enough place - it is touristy, but friendly at the same time.  It does not really have an old town.  Caorle is a town of less than 12,000 people.  We got a room for the night at hotel Petit - yes the rooms were tiny!  Then walked around the town and found something to eat.

Views along the road.  It is very flat here.

The desk manager at the hotel suggested we eat at the restaurant at Hotel Sarah.  The food was not very memorable.  But the outdoors views were fine.

My fish was overcooked and hard to swallow.

Walking back to our hotel we passed this band.

More views of Caorle.

Some kind of crocheted decoration adorned the tree trunks.

So many people smoke here.  If you opt to eat on the outdoor patio you will most likely have to put up with second hand smoke.

They do have some things that look quite old, like this church and tower.

The stones lining the water line are decorated.  I have seen this in at least one other seafront town. This is along the walkway along the sea.  No beach - so no ocean of chairs and umbrellas.

Tomorrow we shall drive from Caorle to Mugge, Italy.  Mugge is only 1 km from the Slovenia border.
