After A arrived at our hotel we walked across the street to get something for breakfast at a place called "The School of Life". As well as the cafe - think hippie good for you things to snack on with coffee. After which we walked to the Rijksmuseum where we had a reservation. We were there to see the Dutch Masters - all the usual. Then headed to the museum cafe for caffeine and carbs! A small loaf of bread - featured in so many of the master's paintings - along with butter and mushy pea humas, also served with crostini.
We spent some time in the museum gift store trying to find a house warming gift for Craig and partner - where we were going next.

Have to have a windmill painting!

Alexis in front of a still life painting - covering the loaf of bread - see lunch below.
View from the cafe. Apparently these metal structures help keep the noise level down in these open spaces.
After finishing seeing the Dutch masters and having a snack at the cafe, we went to the third floor to see some modern art. I surprisingly found some things I liked. Alexis liked this one too. By a Japanese American after WW!
I remember having a top as a child. This one was very large. Alexis and Michael are contemplating more modern art in the background. Not too many folks make it up here.
Not sure what this section is about. But there are many newspaper sections usually featuring dire things like war - with something painted on it but not completely covering the words. This drawing of the couple reminded me so much of the book of sketches I inherited from my mother. She also had a book on how to draw with these illustrations - and then tried a lot of them herself.
A study of chairs
And one airplane!
We caught the 7 tram and then walked a block or two to their canal view apartment. They have a really nice apartment - quite roomy and a great view. They were serving a French picnic - including wine. Lots of cheeses, meats, olives, nuts, fruit and of course French bread. They received the gifts - a set of coasters and a tulip Christmas ornament to enjoy their first Holiday in Amsterdam. We ate and chatted for several hours before heading back to the hotel
Michael and I need to pack up and want to spend more time with Alexis. We are lucky again to enjoy the table and chairs in front of the hotel. A storm is supposed to be coming in - but it waited until Alexis was on her way to her friends. A very nice but quick time spent alone with a child. I love all of my family, but sometimes it is really nice to just focus on your adult child and enjoy the wonderful person they have become!
I enjoy spending time with my whole family, but also appreciate when I get to spend time with them one-on-one. I'm glad you got that opportunity with A.
ReplyDeleteAwwwww, I had such a nice time and indeed such a rare treat to have some alone time. I am glad you guys are on your way and hopefully getting a bit of a more relaxed pace in after this however. And better sleep! Alexis
