Today the plan was to fly to Athens Greece and then drive (or be driven) from Athens to Kalamata. Everything went smoothly up until we tried to board the plane. When we checked out luggage they said our carry-on's were just fine. But at the gate they said - no, you can only have one carry-on each. We each had two small ones. Other had huge bags - but only one. But rules are rules! We had to pay an additional $150 USD. So that was the first bad thing.
We were on the plane when we got an "What's APP" from Lisa. They were using their diplomatic passports and were refused boarding because Greece is one of the very few Euro countries that require a special VISA for diplomats. They had not gotten it - Lisa was overwhelmed with work - because of the recent Ukrainian election fall out, and just missed this. They could have gotten on with regular US passports, but all of them have lapsed except for Lisa's.
So it looks like they will not make it here at all - It is Easter and other Holidays for 5 days in a row in Ukraine so the Embassy will not be open and they cannot get the special VISA. Last we heard they were planning to change their tickets to go to Spain. Hopefully they will at least get a vacation somewhere.
