April 23 Kiev

We are feeling a little more rested and ready to tackle Kiev.  Our plan is to walk to the two famous churches nearest to us.  Here is a glimpse of our walk through the neighborhood.

They still have Russian cars here - but not near as many as in Armenia.

People getting their morning coffee at the closest square.

The local hedgehog!

We reach the square at St Sophia.

Inside the bell tower on the second level.  We walked up the steps to the first viewing area.  We decided the highest level wouldn't add that much - or maybe it was just the number of steps to get there!

Looking up to the first and second levels for viewing and the ceiling.

A close up of the bell tower - angels that look like Cossacks!

The double headed eagle - a symbol of power and dominion.

This is a large complex of buildings.  In one there was an art exhibition.  This is all newly done - but copying the style of someone in the past.

There was a whole room filled with Byzantine style paintings.

In another building there was an exhibit of furniture of the time.  A couple of styles of furnaces.  These were highly decorated.

Other objects on exhibit.

This one looks very southwestern.

Finally we went into the cathedral.  Parts of this building are still under reconstruction.

Metal tiles on the floor.  A lot of them were loose - had to watch your step.

A sarcophagus.

And finally out to lunch.  This was a strange place - But they had English and the food was very decent.

A special ceremony for serving the green borscht or schav.

Back out into Kiev and heading for St Michaels.

In the square in front of St Michael's was this statue of Princess Olga.  She was considered a Christian martyr for her fervor in spreading Christianity.

 Buildings across the street.

A few taken with the fisheye - wide angle - to get it all in.

Things you can't do at St Michaels - remember to leave your balloons home!

Gate out of the complex and into a children's play area.

Back into walking mode.

Near L&T's apartment.

The closest grocery store is in this building.

  1. so funny, since you didn't have small kids with you I guess you didn't go to the playgrounds. That shapes the majority of our trips for the last years. It occurs to me that this period of our lives will pass. I will be sad! Shows a different side of places.
