April 24 - The Russian Woodpecker

Our last stop of the day was to the Duga Radar system location.  It has many nicknames - one of which is The Russian Woodpecker.  It interfered with all shortwave or ham radios all over the world - sounding much like a woodpecker.

This was at one of the checkpoints - so no photos.  We had to undergo two checks for radiation.  Who knows if they checked the meters we wore all day - not while we were there anyway.  But we had to step into a machine very much like at the airport, except the hands go on the outside on detectors and the feet on detectors as well.  No one set of the meters!

Through the gate and on the path to the Duga Radar.

And here we are - it is huge.  If you were around during the 60's and 70's you will remember the missile square - The Russians were coming!  In the Soviet Union the people were all told the evil US was going to attack them.  Hence this anti-ballistic missile early warning system.  Sorry for all the photos - but I found all the lines and angels so interesting.

Walking back - people were all off the path - no one said anything.  We were around the 30 kilometer mark - so maybe it is radiation free.  We saw a lot of farms just after the checkpoint.

Murals exerting workers to be dutiful and stop the evil US.

And just before the gate out - this stop sign in English!
