This specially built city had about 50,000 inhabitants when the disaster occurred. It was built to house all the workers at the nuclear plants. Besides the 6 working or in progress plants - a total of 12 nuclear plants were being planned. There were plans for expansion to house all the additional workers needed. Pripyat is almost completely abandoned in 1986. Nothing was supposed to be removed from this city - of course looters didn't care or understand the danger to themselves and others. Most all usable things have been removed or buried deep in the earth - or are in someone's home causing them medical problems. The following are apartment building, hotels, business or municipal buildings.
We are headed next to a grocery store.
Stuff ready for the May Day parade that never happened.
Our next stop in Pripyat was at the amusement park that never opened - it was to open on May 1, 1986
Next walked by the Sports Stadium with its lights.
The exit from the amusement park.
Next stop at the water front.
These were brand new contraptions to dispense soda. According to our guide - there was one glass. The first person in line paid their money - made their choice and the machine poured out their choice. They drank it - and handed the glass to the next person in line. The machine would rinse it out with water - and so on.
Entrance to the cafe.
Steps down to the water.
Then we continued our walk to the school.
Peaking through the back windows into the classrooms.
A green house.
The front entrance into the school.
A front gate has the alphabet on it.
A mystery machine on a desk.
70's tile work on the side of a building - in yellow and green.
When we bused in - I had seen some artwork through the trees and weeds - no we were in front of some. Really well done and in good condition.
The theater.
And lastly - as we left Pripyat - a sign with its name and year of inception.
