4-20 Cruise on the Black Sea and Taksim Square

After we finished at the Ayasophya, we headed for Sultanahmet Square.  Last time we were here Mike got accosted by a lot of carpet salespeople - all of whom had a a brother, cousin or uncle in Texas.  This time the weather was too bad for even them to be out.  Lisa wanted some hot chestnuts.  At least I think t is her!

A stand selling simit as well as other baked goods.

Next stop was back to the Grand Bazaar.  Lisa needed gifts for family.  We passed this Chinese restaurant as well as many Turkish ones.

Another mosque - one thing that is not lacking in Istanbul.

Back in the Bazaar we passed this tiny tea establishment.  Got both the owner and the tea runner.

Mike bought a lot of scarves.  Some for himself but mostly for others.  I got a blue one.  Also spied a decorative pillow case that would go perfectly in our living room. I hope I can find a pillow in the US that fits - or will have to make one.

Lisa did buy one of the lamps in the background - she has been wanting one for a long time and the price was right!  But she did have to carry it around for the rest of the day!

A sample menu.  We have been trying to find doner kabob as we remembered it from 2015.  No luck, they don't seem to be serving it with the same sauces.  It was still good.

We have been taking the metro all day.  Really inexpensive and reliable.  We took the metro to the pier to catch a cruise of the Bosporus.  We got there just in time to walk onto a boat - for $3.40 each.  Didn't buy tickets which means this is all under the table.  Greece will be like that as well.

This is Maiden Tower.  It dates from early 340 BCE, but has been rebuilt many times.  It was later transformed into a lighthouse.  Now is a landmark and museum.

Mike had read about a new Square that has become the hip place to go for cafes and bars.  We took the metro to the end of the line - Kabatas and then took the funicular up to the top and the Taksim Square.  This is new and quite commercial.  There is a huge mosque being constructed here as well.

We did step into the Kitchenette for a drink.

Then took the metro down in the opposite direction back to our closest stop and walked back to our hotel.

Just managing to catch the sunset over the Bosphorus.
