Our quirky historical house stay in Belhaven district of Jackson, MS

For my own memories, I want to document the historical house we stayed in in the Belhaven district of Jackson MS.  Old houses are quirky!  The floors in all rooms except the kitchen and bathrooms had hills and valleys.  The outlets in the house indented - which was fine for say a toaster plug.  But my computer cord has the converter box built right into the plug.  So the short metal plugs cannot breach the distance to the outlet slots.  So it just hangs there, threatening to fall out.  But the bathroom outlets have to be up to current code - so I had to charge my computer on the bathroom floor!  Most all of the windows had old-fashioned shutters - a lot of them hanging slightly lop-sided.  My bedroom had small windows around the top of the room right next to the ceiling - all with shutters.  One of the comments in the reviews of the property said it could use a good deep cleaning.  I totally agreed.  There was a floor vent about 2' x 3' in the back area by the bedrooms.  It brought back memories of the childhood floor furnace I grew up with.

It was difficult to navigate the brick walkway from the front door to the side gate as they were all going every which way.  I guess all these things give atmosphere - shows that it is an old historical home.  Even the owner, Henry, was quirky.  We had the code to open the box that held the key to the front door.  But said key was not in the box.  Henry arrived a few minutes after our phone call to him.  He has an office just a few blocks away.  He talked a mile a minute - and again encouraged us to try his son's restaurant.  We did and it was actually quite good.

We drove into Jackson on highway 20.  There were times just before Jackson that I was almost airborne in the car.  The road had so many ups and downs it was like a roller coaster.  When we walked the area between the museums, the old capitol and the new capitol, we almost fell several times as the sidewalks were in great need of repair.  Even the area we were in which was pretty much tourist central looked like it was depressed.  We found a hole in the wall type of place to eat lunch.  It looked like all the young people (now remember I am almost 70 - so most everyone looks young to me!) were in and out in less than 1/2 hour.  Our two sandwiches, drinks and 1 order of small fries was around $20.
