Today we drove a little further north to Townsend, TN. It is one of the entryways into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We were thinking that it was late October and the fall color had not really started so we would have the park to ourselves. NOT! This park like so many popular spots never has a quiet day.
Our first stop was at the lovely waterfalls.
Tall trees all around us. With occasional meadows and great views of the mountains.
We did the Cades Cove scenic drive. The roads are all one way and one lane. So if someone decides to stop in front of you - you all stop and wait. And soon train of cars is 20 - 30 cars long.
We stopped to see the John Oliver Place. half mile hike going to and from the location. Some fall color along the trail.
Another stop - I think this was the Methodist Church. There were 4 churches and the buildings all looked identical.
Another farmstead stop. This time more of the farm buildings were intact.
Now, a few shots with the fisheye lens. The sky was very cooperative. Not sure how I got the star effect in the upper right hand corner. Wish I knew so I could get it again.
This granary reminded me so much of the one we had on our farm in Windom.
I don't remember ever having fences like this. But you could build them with less effort. Not sure how much good they do as these were all very low.
Met another couple. Their daughter and son-in-law went off ahead, admonishing them not to talk to strangers. Now that seems like a turn-around in behavior calling.
This is with the fisheye as well. But it does show the dove tail joints that held the buildings together.
I'm fascinated by the history here. Not old, but so close to us it's very relatable. Shocking how much things have changed in a few generations!
