Biloxi, MS and Museums

Last night we stayed in Gulfport, MS.  We drove just a short distance to Biloxi, MS. The sand beaches between these locals are a beautiful white sand.  But the wind has been blowing the past few days so it has been hard to take photos.  When the wind blows the sand that feels like sharp blasts to your bare legs - it also hits the lens of your camera just as hard.  Yesterday I tried to use our system of neutral density, with 1 stop to 3 stop - OK this is boring to most everyone.  Just let me say it didn't work.  With the clouds and rain and some sun, it was too much change to work.  And the wind was driving me crazy.  Mike did not know so he just took photos.  There is a tropical storm aptly named "Micheal" approaching the area.  So after today we are going to head north.  B

But first Biloxi.  We stopped at the visitor center.  Just across the two laned highway is the lighthouse.  Now in the medium between the east and west lanes of Hwy 90.

and not to much further on is the Ohr-O'keefe Museum of Art.  This is not a Geogia Okeefe  Museum,  but a complex designed by Frank Gehry to house the art of George Ohr who did pottery and others.  So Gehry designed these pods to house George Ohr's pottery.  Ohr's pottery is unique in that his fame was that no two pieces are the same.  And they are very unique. The whole complex is not finished.  They are still fund raising to finish the project.

Frank Gehry wanted to include this home in the complex.  It along with a whole lot of other buildings were destroyed by hurricane Katrina.  They build this replica.

This building includes some of George Ohr's work but also houses a school of pottery.

Here are some of George Ohr's work

Another building is for African American art.  I don't remember this guy name - but what I do remember is that his work  was in honor of his wife's memory. I thought that was special.
We took the elevator to the third floor to look down on the complex.  I thought from this few Frank Gehry got it right.

There were several people using the school facilities.  I love taking pictures of the pottery wheels and those working it.  They are such artists.

 Another work by George Ohr.

As we were getting ready to leave the museum I saw this reflection of a staircase.  It intrigued me.
And below the staircase was this car.  This was to honor the antique autos show from this past weekend.

 And the interesting staircase!

then on to lunch at McElroys.  Not as good as I had hoped.  But there were pelicans off in the distance.

Then on to the Maritime  & Seafood Industry Museum.  Mike was very excited about this.  But like a lot of places the promise does not hold up.

There was so much stuff - and everything was so crowded.  The explanation limited. So we just felt over whelmed and not understanding what was being explained.

We headed north and are spending the night in Hattiesburg, MS.  We are trying to escape tropical storm Micheal,  This area should not suffer much.  Just a lot of rain and maybe a little wind.  But where we are should be just fine

  1. I guess that statue with the net outside the museum didn't capture a lot of the meaning you were looking for.
