10-22 Cartagena Part 1

We enjoyed out overnight trip to Mercia so much we decided to try it again - this time heading for Cartagena.  Cartagena is a very historic city.  It has a Roman Theatre as well as a huge archeological site in the middle of town.  This was a photographic trip and we hope to come back another time to to the archeological site as well as some of the many museums here.

We started exploring in early afternoon while the light was still very harsh.

It looks like a lot of other cities we have been to in Europe.  You can buy newspapers and magazines as well as lottery tickets here.

I took this photo because I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the mirror in the changing room at the back of the store.

One of the more ornate window/patio's that we have seen.

I saw this sign in a store window.  I had not heard it - or maybe I have just forgotten as it seems to have been popular in 2017 or so.  The rest of the quote reads:
Inner peace is the new Sucess
Health is the new wealth
Kindness is the new cool.

Cartagena has many statues of sailors and soldiers around the old town and waterfront areas.

Leaving the old town behind and heading for the waterfront.

After we had eaten our lunch (around 3pm) we found this tourist boat about ready to tour around the harbor.  This was not our greatest decision as lunch had not really agreed with either of us.  It turned out to be a rocky experience.  There was a lot of space between the few table and benches that were on this second level.  Which meant trying to walk around to get shots from both sides of the boat were a bit of a problem.  Everyone who did it looked drunk - swaying back and forth and trying to grab onto a bench or table for purchase.

A view back at the city as we left the dock.

Yes - cruise ships to come here.  We later watched this one leave the harbor.

The tour was mainly about the navel history of the harbor.  The Cartagena Naval base is located here.  It is also the home of the Spanish submarine force.

Getting further and further from the city.

lighthouse.

You could get off here and tour this old base.

Another lighthouse and the exit from the harbor.

Back on land we wandered along the waterfront.  Then found a place to sit down to let our stomachs settle down.

We then ambled back towards the Old Town.

More about Cartagena in next post.
