3-6 Tjong A Fie's Mansion

One of the most influential people to move to Medan from China was Tjong A Fie.  He was instrumental in building Medan including the building of hospitals and schools as well as his own family mansion.  The Blue mansion we saw in Penang, Malaysia was the  inspiration for this house.  The family has always lived in this house.  Currently the half of the home that is not a museum is occupied by Tjong Nie Mie or Mimi Tjong as she is called now.

The entrance to the house.

We actually drove into the back yard area of the home and entered through the rear of the house. We walked to the front of the house to start our tour.

The original trunks.

The merchants bedroom.

A very old vacuum cleaner!

The formal dining area.

I love these Chinese pictures - I still hope one day to get a set like this.

One of the children's bedrooms.

Area open to the courtyard below.

On the first floor in the kitchen area.  Location for grinding of the grains.

The kitchen stove - The fire is lit inside so you can cook on top surface.

At the end is the "burner" for hotter fire.  And also a meat grinder.

Lastly we went into a front parlor to see some mementos.  This is a row of photographs of important people who have visited the museum.  See the photo third from the left.

On close up - on the left is the Charge d' Affairs of Indonesia Peter Mark Haymond and his wife.  Next is MiMi Tjong and the last one is Lisa Podolny.  I suspect this is not a permanent display and will be changed out the next time the new Charge d' Affairs and Consular General of Medan visit this museum.
