3-4-2026 Medan - The Mall Experience

My husband and I have been feeling restless.  We have been in the house since we got here accept for going out to restaurants.  This morning I talked Michael into walking around the grounds of the compound.  We surprised several of the working people who were not expecting the occupants of the house to come walking by their areas of work!  There is a warren of paths and gates you can use to actually go all around the house.  The house is divided into  3 sections - the family quarters, the public area and the back of the house where the people who keep the place up live out their days.  I have only seen a tiny portion of this area.

Tim has said we should not walk around the neighborhood as the sidewalk situation is hit or miss.  We  talked Tim into taking us to the mall so we could get a longer walk in.  Once in the mall, Tim pointed out one of Lisa's favorite stores which is known for very soft clothing.  I was suddenly in a shopping mood.  I found two cardigans in blue and grey that were very comfortable.  Michael found 3 dress shirts - each item was about $24.  Tim showed us around the mall - about 5 stories tall so we actually did get some walking in.

On the way out we stopped at the Kitchenette - a branch of the one we had dinner at the night before.  I had some chicken tenders which were as good as last night.

And then I tried the "milk cake"  It is ubiquitous, all the restaurants have large photos advertising it.  You are supposed to pour the milk over the cake.  I don't like soggy things - so we each poured the milk on each of our bites as desired.  The cake was fantastic as it was - no need to pour milk over it!

The mall and its surrounds.

This area is known as Little India.

Photos on the drive back home.

They have many abandoned buildings as well.

And a lot of large compounds with houses.
