3-13 Wat Chalong

A little history of Wat Chalong Temple first.  Wat Chalong is Phukets largest and most honored Buddhist temple.  It was built in the early 19th century.  The temple grounds contain many buildings - one is the 60 meter tall Grand Pagoda.  You can climb up the three stories for a better view and also to contemplate the fragment of bone from the Buddha on display there.

We did not enter any of the buildings as we were not dressed properly - all shoulders and knees must be covered and we were both in shorts.

The gateway entrance to the temple grounds.

Roof detail.

A closeup of the windows as shown in the photo above.

A weird manikin showing the proper dress code.  Her sarong went below her knees.  There wa a similarly dressed mail on the other side of the gate.

More elephants on display.  They are revered in Thailand.

A very large gift shop.

A detail of a door - taken through the bars of a gate.

Close up of door.

Another building on the grounds.

Dragon detail.

Two priests taking a break.  Note the shoes are off.

Michael showing his displeasure.  It is very hot and he is tired.  But we must go on - there is so much more to see!
