January 7 - Day Trip to Ipoh and a Cave Temple

We wanted to take a day trip onto Peninsular Malaysia - but no one was offering that service.  Michael talked to our guy Emmanuel who had driven us around Penang Island a few days ago and he was up for it.  The place everyone recommended to go to was Ipoh - that is pronounced as if the I was a long E.  There are several cave temples in the area as well as the old town of Ipoh.

We stopped for breakfast at a hawker morning market as we headed out for our 2 1/2 hour drive - first heading for Kek Look Tong Temple.  We choose this temple because they did not mention as one did - that after the first 400 steps you would finally enter the temple.

We are now off the island and in the state of Perak on Peninsular Malaysia.

According to our guide book, the entrance to Kek Look Tong is the most impressive of the cave temples in the area.

Eight bearded men playing a board game.

Off to the side of the entrance is this statue of the Goddess of Mercy - Kwan Yin - standing in a lotus pond filled with koi.

That is Confucius standing in the background.

The Chinese Buddha of Future Happiness.

It is a cave - here are a few of the more interesting formations.

Not a natural formation!

The exit at the back of the cave leads down to a small pond and garden area.

Statues of the 18 Lohans - or original followers of Buddha.

My favorite is the Taming Tiger Arahant.

And of course you have to have some way to make money - it is free to visit the temple.
