January 5 & 6 George Town

On Thursday we took a rest day - other than going into George Town for lunch.  So I took just a few photos.  We did something similar on Friday - we had breakfast in Georgetown, walked around a little then headed home to rest before our evening photo shoot with a professional photographer.  But that will be another post.

After lunch on Thursday we walked to the liquor store to resupply and passed this mosque.

I saw this sign, but did not read it until later.  Too bad - as we could have gone in.  So many mosques do not offer the proper attire - or offer to rent it.  Some want you to put on the entire ensemble.  That is way to hot here.  Honestly I don't see how the women can stand being covered in heavy cloth from head to foot in this hot humid weather.

Emmanuel, our driver from yesterday wanted us to try these biscuits in the local style - so he dropped off a box this evening.

The biscuits are savory with a touch of sweetness.

And on to Friday:  To the morning market for breakfast.

These buns look like they are made out of marshmallows - but I have not tasted them

These turned out to be something like glue sticks - but they are so colorful I couldn't resist taking a photo.

We found the doughnuts we had tried the day before.  One of my favorites.

Apparently spit happens a lot here so this sign is necessary!  The other sign indicates that no alcohol is allowed here as this is a Muslim market.

Crispiness is good!

Morning means all kinds of markets all over.  Everything spills out onto the sidewalk.  Cars, motorcycles and people share the road.

This looks like a long stretch of sidewalk.  Only problems is one guy thought it was where he needed to park his motorcycle.  The first guy was more considerate.

Ah - a heavenly sidewalk!

Something like a dollar store.

This looks like a stove to me.  Just randomly on the sidewalk.  The problem is that it never gets cold enough to need a stove!

There was a big campaign to get people to stop using plastic bags at grocery and other stores.  The ban started at the beginning of January.  So when we went to the market here in Penang we ended up paying for plastic bags and packing the rest in our backpacks.  The weird thing is - when you order groceries through Grab every single item comes in a separate plastic bag and you do not pay for them!

When I first saw this sign, I thought, they don't have an X through the hat - so can I still wear mine?  Turns out it means a speed bump.  The ones here are just as nasty as the ones in the U.S.

Want to start a restaurant?

  2. That does sound like a weird loophole that Grab can use bags still. Glad you are getting more donuts!
