Goodbye 2022 - Travel to George Town Penang and Relaxing

On Friday the 30th of December and we spent the morning packing.  We hd a lot of food stuff that is heavy- so we are left a lot behind.  Also left behind a yoga mat we spent around $10 on.  We are traveled on a discount airline called Batik Malaysia.  We do not have near as much luggage allowance as we are used to.

We have to be out of this apartment by 11am, but our flight didn't leave until 3:45 pm.  The Melaka airport is tiny.  No restaurants, just snack shops.  So we packed peanut butter sandwiches!  Of-course we had many hours to wait at the airport.  But our worries about overweight luggage turned to be for nothing.  Even though they weighed them and they were over - no one said anything!  It was a tiny jet - maybe 70 seats.  The ride was a little bumpy, but quick.

After we collected our luggage we went to get a taxi into town.  The wait was over 3 hours and they were no longer letting you book a taxi ahead of time.  We tried Grab next - no problem and twenty minutes water we were on our way.

Our last apartment building is quite a ways out of George town. Only place to eat within safe walking distance is the tiny convenience store next to our building.  It is run by a delightful Malaysian women whose rice cooker has unfortunately stopped working.  So she offered us noodle dishes or vegetarian pancakes.  Sigh - at least we didn't starve.

The next few days we will relax and settle in. On Saturday (Dec 31) we went to the AEON grocery store to pick up provisions.  The store is in a huge mall and the only exit from the grocery store is into the mall itself.  We did not get the heavy stuff as we could not figure out how to get everything to the main entrance which is on another floor than the grocery store.  As it was we did take the cart out into the main mall.  I kept expecting to be stopped, as we were the only ones pushing a grocery cart.  But no one did.  Eventually we got to the elevator and left the cart there.  Then when we got back to the apartment we ordered more groceries - like two large waters through Grab. So much easier.

On New Year's Eve I saw very few fire works from our huge living room window.  I know they celebrate the holiday - so maybe it was on the other side of our building.

We will continue our Holiday for 12 more days in 2023 before we head home.  Happy New Years to all!

  1. Happy new years mom! You must have seen enough fireworks back in Malaka to make up for it. Glad to see you guys settled in, I know you'll figure your groove there too.
