May 5 - Obidos

This village is known for its cuteness.  It's name means "walled town".  In 1282 King Denis brought his bride Isabel here and she loved it - so he gave it to her as a wedding gift.  Later kings continued the tradition.  I keep forgetting that cute means - kitschy cute shops.  That is what the town is made of.  Not that photographic,  We all got the hunger crabs just as we decided to climb onto the walls of the city.  The steps were difficult - and then I found out the girls are not so fond of heights - and the parents were even more unhappy with their daughters being so close to the edge of a 30 foot fall.  So that was quickly aborted.

The entrance into the town.

And immediately there are restaurants and shops.

And strange chairs that you could move away from the wall - but then you would be laying down.

Quaint side streets.

Another entrance to the town.

We did do the stairs and I took a couple of photos before we decided it was too dangerous and down we went.

And back into the town.

At this point we were seriously searching for a place for lunch.  We almost stopped at a snack food type place - but no one could figure out what they would eat.  So it was a good thing that we found a tapas place - which was very good and everyone found something that they wanted.

Then back to the car and since it was still early - where should we go.  Rob found a Lighthouse not too far away.  It was located on top of cliffs.  So it was perfect - lighthouse photos for Rob and me and climbing on rocks for the girls.

It reminded me very much of the California Big Sur area - except the succulents are mostly yellow with some pink instead of being a deep pink as in California.

The evening after our visit to Tomar - we watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail.  Here the Heald women recreate the horse galloping scenes.

  2. I've never seen a chair designed like that, although I guess it means they wouldn't be stolen. Were they propped against the wall? It seems like it wouldn't feel secure.
