We have been without a car so far in our time here in Celufa. We had decided that we wanted to try that life style and see how it worked for us. We walk everywhere. Everything we could possibly need is within 5-6 blocks. That includes medical clinics - but not the hospital. That we took a taxi to get to. But there is only so far one can walk to and return before getting too tired. There is no public transportation except taxi's and a train with limited destinations.
So this morning we walked to the Euroauto storefront to see about the prices. We were concerned because our International Drivers license expires on October 14. Oh No, the agent says - then you can only get the car for one day. But when Michael went to show him the International license, he said he didn't need to see it. Turns out he meant he thought our New Mexico (International to him) license would expire on October 14. No problem we can book the car for as long as we want as long as the NM license is valid!
So we are getting the smallest car we can get for a week starting on Saturday. We wanted small because out parking space in the back is very small and difficult to get into. And all roads in small villages are narrow. Note the narrow streets in this post.
So instead of not being able to go anywhere else - to maybe having one day trip, we now have the option of spending 7 days traveling! As we were here in Sicily last year in October and November we saw a lot of the island. But there are still things we missed out on. We want to go to Enna which is in the mountains in the middle of the island. There is a famous cathedral in Montréal. There are many small quaint villages that I would like to visit. We were in Palermo, but with a guide with his own itinerary. I don't think we will want to drive to the other side of the island - but there are some things there that we missed as well.
I am excited to be going somewhere new. But I also researched things in Cefalu to see. I had forgotten that Cefalu is one of the top 10 places to see in Sicily. I want to go to the Marina here. So far it is just too far for my foot to make the journey and back - maybe I can get Michael to drive there. I think if you drive there from the other side of town - you won't have to go through old town and all its narrow streets. I had hoped that we would be able to drive to the top of "the Rock", in order to see the ruins of the Temple of Diana, but alas the only way to get there is to make the climb up the steep pathway. That will not happen!
Today I am taking a rest day - walked too much yesterday. I need to get in shape for all our travels to come!
It will be interesting to see if the two of you cram in as much as you can during the next week or if you keep some of your routines from the previous weeks.
