2025 10 5-7 Catching Up

Time to do a little catching up.  Some days I take morning photos or evening photos - or photos of mundane things in El Campello.  So here goes!

An early morning shot as the clouds slowly breakup.

It has been rainy and windy so the surf is up.  Out come the surfers - for the first time since we have been here.

There were 5 or 6 surfers in the water - but really hard to see them as they seemed to spend most of their time trying to get to the right spot.  Riding the wave for only a very short time.  here 4 surfers are thinking about getting into the water while on the beach.

The clouds are rolling in before the storm.

I mostly walk along the water front, but on the way back I walked on the main drag - San Bartolome.

There are a lot of stores like this in El Campello.  They are the source of cheap household goods - and also yarn.  I got Michael a spatula here - which has became his favorite.

Also lots of donor kabob places.  We have not tried this one.

This is the Mercadona - our favorite grocery store that is close by.  The largest - Walmart style store is Carrefour which is in the next town over.  Easy to stop by on our way back to El Campello from Alicante where we pick up visitors.  Our apartment is also on this road.

Dr. Google said the full moon was on October 6.  I think this was the next morning.

And this is sunset the same day.

My niece, Rene Michelle who lives in Madrid arrived in El Campello on Friday.  We picked her up from the train station in Alicante and stopped at the Carrefour in San Juan on our way home.  We needed various household things and we wanted to be sure we had food she could eat as she is a vegetarian.

Since then we have been mainly sticking to home - taking long walks and eating good food.  Michael and RM cooked on Friday.  A big pot of beans with lots of vegetables and cheese.  But on Saturday we did a splurge meal at La Cova here in El Campello.  It is on a hill above the marina - I forgot to take photos of the view, but I did take photos of the meal.

Michael and I had a starter of pate served with crackers.  We were also given a roll which I prefer.  I am picky about my pate - but this was excellent and combined well with the pickles and capers.

One of the reasons we chose this restaurant was it is one of the few restaurants in Spain to have a vegetarian menu.  Spain is meat heavy which does not work well for vegetarians.  The other reason is that it came highly recommended and is known for its rice dishes.  This was RM's starter - but could have easily served as the main course.  It was a large slice of quiche along with a good sized salad.  I had a small sample of the quiche and it was excellent!  You can see the roll - almost small baguette that we each were served.  Michael and I also got garlic shrimp which also were quite good.

Michael and I shared the lobster rice dish.  We had this dish in Valencia last year and it was excellent.  This one was decidedly mediocre.  Michael thought it tasted burnt - I just thought it was awful.  This region is not known for lobster - I can understand that the lobster has been frozen and then unthawed before being cooked.  But the rice and flavorings were definitely off and the lobster was dry and tasteless.

Rm's main course - which was also a main size serving was vegetable filled Turkish pastries.  She said they were excellent.

None of us finished our meals - so that we could get deserts.  I got this chocolate brownie with ice cream.  At first I was disappointed as it was very dark chocolate but not sweet at all.  But half way through the brownie I reached the molten lava part which changed the flavor proportions completely and at that point was great.  RM got an apple almond cake which was very good.  Michael got coffee and shared both our deserts.

The reason RM scheduled her trip to see us during this time is because El Campello has its Moors and Christians Fiesta this weekend.  Sunday morning is the big start to the fiesta.  So I will start with that in my next post.
