6-4 Ferry to the North Islands

Our first car adventure in sightseeing.  Michael put the name of one of the North islands in his phone GPS and off we went.  Everyone drives really slow in Sweden - at least in town - so there is no feeling of panic about missing a turn. The Ferry is parked at the end of the road so it is hard to miss.  If you are early you just park in rows in front of the ferry.  Or if you get there just in time - you just drive on.

You can get out of your car and go up some steps to a viewing area so you can watch the approach to the first island, Hono.  Most people stayed in their cars.  With my foot in a boot it would have taken too long for me to get any where.  So I contented myself with taking photos from the car.

An interesting view from the sideview mirror.

On the other side - you just drive off.  There is no charge for this ferry.  We wondered why they didn't just build a bridge - it is just a mile and a half to the first island.  I imagine most of the people living on these islands need to work in Gothenburg and take the ferry twice a day.

As you can see the traffic is very mellow.  This is the end of the photos from my phone.  The rest - all taken with my camera - seem strangely jumbled around.

I liked the architecture of the homes on the islands.  This one even had a white picket fence.

The tourist map suggest we eat lunch at a restaurant called Nimbus on Ockero.  We found it easily, had some issues parking close enough to the restaurant for me - so Michael dropped me off in front of the entrance and went to park the car.  By the time he got back to the restaurant - I had discovered that the food was served cafeteria style.  You waited in line and then just like elementary school, someone scooped up the food onto your plate and you carried the tray to the table of your choice.  We quickly figured out that that was not going to work for me and my crutches.  Besides the restaurant was filled with so many mothers and crying children.  Also lots of older people and construction workers!  An odd combination.  There was a tourist bus in the parking area - so they might have been in the mix as well.

We reversed the car parking situation and drove back to the first island.  And found this gem.  The people in the back ground are getting their salads from the salad station.  This is very common here.  There are very small plates available and usually 2-3 choices of salads.  The salads are already dressed - so no choice on salad dressing.

Michael enjoying a bite of salad.  The orange in the front salad is a large peal of carrot.

The menu is generally very limited - here the only things I saw ordered was the Hake with vegetables as above and a shrimp sandwich.  The piece of Hake was plenty big, and under it was small boiled potatoes, roasted cabbage and asparagus.  All very delicious!  We have talked about going back to the islands just so we can experience another lunch like this!

I was quite frustrated with my inability to move around a lot to find a better shot.

I mostly sat on one of these and tried to find interesting things to photograph.

Near the parking lot there was an area with picnic tables.  The food truck is called Thai Corner.  There was a small but steady stream of customers.  Some by car, by foot or by bicycle to pick up a meal.

Next, we just started to wander around the island.  And ended up this dead end of a road by a cemetery.  The area also has a ton of hiking paths, some of which seem to go right through the cemetery.

Sorry these photos are so jumbled - this is the restaurant we had lunch at.  Followed by photos of the area around the restaurant.

You can see the next island over - they are really close together.

More wandering brought us to this spot.

I took many pictures of houses to show the different styles of homes.

We saw this church in the distance and headed towards it.

To discover more of Michael's favorite things to photograph - scaffolding.

In another direction - we could see another church and headed towards it.  And where there is a church - there is a cemetery.

The view across the street

And the church up the hill.

All in all a wonderful day.  The sun was in and out, the rain stayed away and the wind was not too bad.

  1. The photos don't look jumbled to me, but then I don't know what order they are supposed to be in... You had some beautiful skies in those photos!
