December 28 Harmony Street and Temples

Around 10am we headed back to tourist land of Dutch Square.  But this time we are headed to a  parallel street to Jonker street.  The Malaysian name is Jalan Tokong Besi, but it is known as Harmony street because of all the religious buildings along the street.  I am including some other buildings on the street just to show the ambiance of the street.  I ended up with 81 final pictures - and so will have to cull some more.

I believe this is the Buddhist Melaka San duo Temple.

Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moothi Temple.  This is from the 18th century and is Hindu dedicated to Ganesh.

This temple requires that your legs are covered.  Don't we look good?

The Kampung Kling Mosque since 1748.  The Muslims used the buildings that were already there and converted them into mosques.

No shoes from here on and you must be fully covered if you are a women and in long sleeves and long pants if you are a man.  There was no one there to tell us what to do.  So we opted not to go in.  Just took photos from the outside.  A lot of mosques are not that exciting on the inside.  The outside might look grand - but inside is just a large room to hold worshippers.

A pool outside the mosque.

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple.  This is a mixed used temple - catering to Taoists, Buddhists, and Confucianism.  More pictures from inside following.

No special clothing required - shoes on.

Details from the roof.

A Buddhist temple called Xiang Lin Si Temple.

Upstairs in the main Buddha room.

More street scenes from the second floor of the Xiang Lin Si Temple, looking back to the mosque.

The photos below are street scenes on Jonker street.  This is to contrast with the photos taken at night at the Jonker Street Night Market.

  2. love all the different temples and how they have to show they are different from each other. Shoes on or off? Legs showing or not? To show you're in the "in crowd" you need to show you know the rules.

  3. It is interesting to see the juxtaposition of all the religions. How do they all coexist together? Is there any friction? Such a fascinating country.
