Above the Arctic Circle

Last stop of this trip is to Tromso, Norway to see the Northern Lights.  This was a bucket list item for my son-in-law, Tim and a desire of mine.  My husband and daughter, not so excited.  It was not near as cold as I expected.  Temperatures mostly around 30 degrees F.  They had had snow - but it was raining the day we arrived.

Our hotel - Clarion the Edge, over looked the harbor.  These first photos were taken near our hotel.

Tim had booked us a dinner at the fanciest restaurant in town on this street our first night there.  We all chose to get the set meal plus drinks.  This was our first sticker shock - It set us back around $650 dollars, the portions were very small, and the food was not that good.

The curious rounded building is the library.

Trolls play a big part in Norwegian folklore.

The town square is below.  The harbor is in the background.  Even tho it rained, there is still a lot of ice around on the sidewalks.  That is true especially in shadowed areas.

The second day we headed for the Polar Museum.

This is the second naked statue I have seen in Tromso - I wonder what that means?

And this outdoor bar - we did not check, but I hope they were selling hot drinks!

The local church is very picturesque.  We never saw it open so have no idea what it looks like inside.

A photo of our hotel in the distance.

There were a lot of stuffed polar bears in restaurants and store windows.  This was in a restaurant.

One final post for this trip - the Northern Lights.

  1. your lack of enthusiasm comes through in the post. That museum looks a bit grim!
