Strasbourg Christmas Markets Day 3

We woke up to rain.  It was on and off all day - with heavier downpours in the evening.  With grey almost white skies, daytime pictures are pretty - meh!

But we did go to a new market - Place Broglie, which was the original market and is still the biggest.  As you can guess, it is also the most congested.  But we also found that it was the most interesting as far as finding original artwork.

First time we found blown glass ornaments.  They were quite expensive and very delicate.

Need lights for your Christmas tree or your house - they have that too!

Lots of booths with "build your own nativity set pieces.  Choose your manager, Jesus, Mary, Joseph etc.

Always lots of stands with Bretzels as they are known here.  And waffles to add sugar, nutella etc too.  But we have found that most of this food has been sitting around for a long time and is not so good.  I still hope to get a fresh beignet  - not like the stale ones we got the other day.  Probably have to go to a bakery.  Shown to the left of the waffles.  They are like doughnuts with fillings.

We found this artisan we really liked.  We both took photos before we realized he had a sign up, saying no photography.  He did not want his original art to be copied.  We made up for it by buying a lot of stuff.

We find it difficult to settle on what to eat in these kind of markets - as my husband and I have such different tastes.  We finally agreed on a sausage on a roll with dijon mustard and this dish of chicken and mushrooms with white wine sauce over spatial.  Both were very good - but too much for the two of us for lunch.

Then we waddled back to our hotel to rest before the evening lights.  Guess what the name of this store is?

Hotel view from our room around 4pm.

We left our hotel room around 5:30pm in light rain.  So glad I spent the 12 Euro to get the stained glass window printed umbrella yesterday.  Things look so much better in the dark than the grey light, even with the rain.

Our goal tonight is to find the spot where the perfect photo in the Strasbourg, capital of Christmas magazine was shot.  Not to duplicate it - but to make our own interpretation of it.  It looked like it had been taken from the other side of the canal.  But that would mean that we would have to leave the island and to return have to go through security again.  We managed to find some real good spots to shot from.  At first we took turns holding umbrellas for each other - but that took too long.  So we got better at holding the umbrella up with our left arm - and still could take photos.  If you need a camera for low light or night photos get an Olympus OMD 1 camera!  All these photos are hand-held.

A church on the other side from the island.

We are now on the opposite side of the island from our hotel.  But nothing is that far away.

The Notre Dame Cathadrale from a distance.  It will take us a while to get back to the hotel.  There were a lot more umbrellas that you see in these photos.
